MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering (MSECE)

MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering:

This program admits students with a bachelor鈥檚 degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or a related area. Students from other engineering fields, mathematics or science can be admitted as well with an extra requirement to complete undergraduate level background deficiency courses determined at the time of admission. Such courses will not count towards the MS degree completion requirements.

Dual/Accelerated BS to MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering

The dual/accelerated BS to MS in electrical and computer engineering (MSECE) offers outstanding undergraduate students in electrical engineering or computer engineering the opportunity to pursue both the bachelor's and master's in unison and in an accelerated time frame.

MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering

To be considered for admission to the program the minimum requirements are

    • Student must have earned a GPA of at least 3.000 (or an equivalent score from another country) in the bachelor's degree.
    • Students whose bachelor鈥檚 degree is from an institution outside the U.S. are required to submit official scores of the GRE General Test along with the admission application. However, there is no minimum score requirement.
    • Applicants whose native language is not English must provide English proficiency exam scores. One of the following is required: TOEFL score at or above 79 in internet-based exam or IELTS score at or above 6.5.
Dual/Accelerated BS to MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering

This program is available to current BS in electrical engineering or BS in computer engineering students at 九色视频 only.

    • Student must have successfully completed at least 90 credit hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher in the bachelor's degree
    • Degree/Program Requirements are the same as the regular MSECE program.  Up to 9 technical elective credit hours numbered above 600 can be used for both BS and MSECE programs.

Degree Requirements: 

  • The Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering has flexibility so that students can tailor the degree based on their professional requirements and interests. Students can major in one of the following areas: communication and signal processing; computer systems; control systems; or power systems.
  • Students must choose one of the three graduating options: thesis, project or coursework鈥憃nly. A total of 30 credit hours of graduate work is required for all options. All courses must be approved by the student鈥檚 advisor and the graduate coordinator
  •  Courses that are taken without prior approval may affect the plan of study process, if deemed not to satisfy the graduation requirements.

  • Degree requirements for Dual/Accelerated BS to MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering are the same as the regular MSECE program. Up to 9 technical elective credit hours numbered above 600 can be used for both BS and MSECE programs.
Required Core Courses

The following courses are required independent of graduating options

  • EE 792: Linear Systems
  • AND one of the following courses
    • EE 754 Probabilistic methods in systems
    • EE 711 Optimization techniques for cyber-physical systems
Thesis Option
  • Minimum coursework credits 24 hrs. (all courses must be approved by the advisor)
    • Maximum credits below 700 level 6 hrs.
    • Maximum independent study 6 hrs. (as a part of coursework credits)
  • Minimum thesis credits 6 hrs.
Project Option
  • Minimum coursework credits 27 hrs. (all courses must be approved by the advisor)
    • Maximum credits below 700 level 6 hrs.
    • Maximum independent study 3 hrs. (as a part of coursework credits)
  • Minimum project credits 3 hrs.
Coursework Only Option
  • Minimum coursework credits 30 hrs. (all courses must be approved by graduate coordinator)
    • Maximum credits below 700 level 6 hrs.
    • Maximum independent study 0 hrs.
  • Please refer to the approved non ECE classes. If a student is interested in taking a course outside this list they MUST have a pre-approval from the Graduate Coordinator
  • Minimum number at 800 level 9 hrs. 
  • As a part of applied learning requirement students should complete one of the following classes
    • ECE 875 鈥 Computer Systems in Data Analytics
    • ECE 826 鈥 Digital Communication Systems 鈥 II
    • ECE 893 鈥 Optimal Control
    • ECE 897 鈥 Operation and Control of Power Systems

Submitting requests to Graduate Coordinator

All inquiries can be sent to the graduate coordinator directly. Any approval requests such as plan of study, exceptions and full course load certification needs to be emailed to ECE.grad@wichita.edu. Please refer to the specific deadlines and requirements.

Plan of Study

If you are an MSECE project, thesis, or Ph.D. student you must consult with your advisor before completing your plan of study. Once you have their approval then forward the plan of study to the Graduate Coordinator.

Plans of study will be reviewed on 15th and 30th of every month. Graduate Coordinator will approve/disapprove the form and forward it to the Graduate School. Please note plans of study will not be approved during the following dates:

  • April 15 to June 1
  • July 15 to August 1
  • November 15 to January 15

When submitting plan of study please remember the following:

  • Do not fill Major Code and Completion Code or Track and Option.
  • Make sure Professional/Scholarly/Integrity Training information is properly marked. For more information please use the link: /academics/graduate_school/psit/index.php
  • MSECE students can鈥檛 have more than 32 hours listed.
  • Please sign the form using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Do not sign on top of the signature field as affects others.
  • When saving the file please save using the following format

Full Course Load Certification

If you are an MSECE project, thesis, or Ph.D. student, your advisor must approve this form. Coursework only students need to contact the Graduate Coordinator.  

If you are a coursework only student, please follow the instructions below.  

Full course load certifications must be submitted within five business days of the semester.

When submitting a full course load certification please remember the following:

  • In the body of the email please provide a reason for the request
  • Indicate the semester you are planning to graduate.
  • Indicate how many hours you are planning to enroll.
  • Please sign the form using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Do not sign on top of the signature field as affects others.

Exception Forms:

If you are an MSECE project, thesis, or Ph.D. student you must consult with your advisor before completing your exceptions forms. Once you have their approval then forward the exception form to the Graduate Coordinator. If you are a coursework only student, it is highly recommended that you meet with the graduate coordinator before preparing the exception form unless your request is to take less than 6 credit hours as a GTA, GRA or GA.

There is no deadline for submitting exception forms. Graduate Coordinator will approve/disapprove the form and forward it to the Graduate School within 3 business days. Students will receive the final decision from the Graduate School.

When submitting an exception form please remember the following:

  • Make sure your justification is very clear.
  • Provide evidence to support your request.
  • Please use additional pages if needed so that you have sufficient space to provide justification.
  • Please sign the form using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Do not sign on top of the signature field as affects others.

Plan of Study: 

Soon after completing all background deficiency courses, if any, and before completing 12 credit hours of MSECE courses, students must file a plan-of-study.  Download the Plan of Study form from the Graduate School website and complete is digitally using Adobe Acrobat Reader. Please use correct course information and areas listed in the website. The graduate coordinator will review and approve the plan of study. Once approved, graduate coordinator will forward your plan of study to graduate school for final approval.

PSIT: Professional and Scholarly Integrity Training

All graduate students at Wichita State must complete Professional and Scholarly Integrity Training. Please follow the instructions from Graduate School. Once you complete the training save the page as a PDF and submit it along with your Plan of Study.
