The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires people who want F-1 or J-1 visas to pay a one-time SEVIS Fee before applying for a visa. The SEVIS Fee for F-1 visas is $350. The SEVIS fee for J-1 visas is $220. This is in addition to the normal visa processing fee of US$160. How do I pay the SEVIS Fee?

4. Reasons for Visa Denials

The most common reasons for visa denials are:

  1. The visa officer suspected the student of wanting to immigrate to the U.S. You must prove to the visa officer that you plan to return home after graduation. Examples of proof:
    * Owning a house or business in your country
    * Having a guaranteed job when you return home
    * Having a spouse, children, or close family at home
    * You will inherit property, a business, or assets in your country
    * Have admission to a major that will allow you to get a job when you return home. For example, if you major in Aerospace Engineering, an aerospace industry must exist in your country so that you can find a job after you graduate.
  2. You do not have enough money to study in the U.S.
  3. You did not bring all required documents with you to the U.S. Embassy for the interview.
  4. You lied about something on your visa application or during the visa interview.
  5. You failed a security background check (called "Administrative Processing)

5. Help! I Was Denied a Visa!

  • If you are denied a visa and would like to try again, you may need to  for a future term and get a new I-20.
  • No university in the U.S. can control the outcome of a visa application. We cannot require the embassy to grant you a visa or influence their decision in any way.

Conditions/Pre-requisites:

If you have certain conditions or pre-requisite courses listed in our admission letter, the expectation is that you clear those within your first semester to first year as a graduate student. If you think you should not have been assigned certain pre-requisite courses, please reach out to your academic advisor listed in your admission letter.

English Proficiency:

It is mandatory for international applicants to provide an acceptable TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, or Duolingo score report for admission. We understand that many countries have English as an official language along with other languages that are native to that country. Many, if not most, of our foreign students are educated (at least at the college level) in English. However, we find that the experience of being educated in English vs. living in a country where the native language is English, to be very different. To ensure the success of our graduate students, we require demonstration of high level of proficiency in English. The only time the TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Duolingo requirement is waived is when the applicant has graduated from a university located in the US/UK/Canadian/New Zealand, or Australia within the last 2 years. Testing English proficiency is not only to our benefit, but yours as well. It will help you measure your preparedness for reading, writing, and comprehending English at a level sufficient for a higher education setting. We want all of our students to be successful, and excellent English language skills are a key to that success.

Graduate Assistantships:

Financial assistance for graduate students usually comes in the form of an assistantship with the department. Assistantships provide a wage and, if you work enough hours, may entitle you to the much lower in-state tuition rate. Each department does its own hiring. You should contact the graduate coordinator of the department regarding assistantship opportunities, however Handshake is a great place to start looking. You can search and apply for on-campus employment via the Handshake website. Keep in mind that most departments will not consider a student for an assistantship until they have completed at least one semester of study at 九色视频. Assistantships are very competitive so there is no guarantee you will be given an assistantship.

If you did not present official final transcripts and degree certification when you applied for admission, please bring your official final transcripts and degree certificate with you to Wichita. What you uploaded in your application portal is not considered official.

CHECK-IN

You will receive further email communication from the Office of International Education on how to schedule your check-in time approximately one month before the start of classes. You will not be allowed to enroll without completing the check-in process.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Graduate students may choose to live on campus in one of our apartment style residence halls: The Flats and The Suites. Information on these on-campus housing opportunities can be found at .  Most graduate students prefer to live off campus. While the University cannot assist in finding these locations, International Education does provide information that can assist in locating housing within walking distance to the 九色视频 campus. In addition to paying rent, students living off campus should also expect to pay for utilities (electric, water, gas), as well as internet and cable television, if desired). Expenses are estimated on the I-20 cost of attendance and may vary significantly, depending on where you chose to live. Remember that housing costs on the I-20 are only estimated for 9 months. Students staying in the U.S. all year should expect to contribute more to their cost of living expenses.

New students should not expect the University to have housing available upon arrival to Wichita. Many incoming students find the need to reserve a hotel room for a few days while coordinating housing upon arrival. Additionally, students may connect with international student organizations through social media to find accommodations.

HEALTH MATTERS

 Insurance:

九色视频 requires that all international students have medical insurance. You will be automatically charged for medical insurance unless you can provide proof of medical insurance coverage from another provider that meets U.S. Affordable Care Act benefit requirements. For more details, please visit:

Medical Insurance:

Please bring your vaccination records with you to the U.S. If you need any vaccinations when you arrive, your student health insurance will cover them and you can get them at Student Health. We recommend that you take care of any existing medical or dental problems at home since student medical insurance does not cover routine dental work or eye examinations.

TB Testing: All new students are required to complete state-mandated TB testing prior to enrollment. All appointments are scheduled online by following the instructions on the provided link. University health insurance begins on August 1, 2022. Any services you receive prior to this date are not covered by insurance. If you plan on scheduling your tuberculosis test prior to this date you will need to pay the $80 fee at the time of the appointment.
