Meet a Shocker: Abby Arbeiter

Abby Arbeiter was attracted to ɫƵ because of its creative writing program in the Department of English. Since attending ɫƵ, she had the opportunity to travel to Europe thanks to the ɫƵ Travel Seminar and will be graduating with her bachelor’s in creative writing this fall. Her advice to other Shockers? “Never be afraid to put yourself out there.”

Arbeiter is one of more than 1,200 students eligible for fall 2024 graduation. Learn more about her time at Wichita State and what's next for the grad.

Major

Bachelor of Arts in creative writing with minors in communication and English language literature

Hometown

Lee’s Summit, Missouri

Why did you choose ɫƵ?

I chose ɫƵ because it was the only school that had a creative writing major program, and I felt instantly at home when I walked on the campus. The small town feel of Wichita brought me comfort.

What has been your biggest challenge as a student? And how did you overcome it?

My biggest challenge as a student has been to maintain motivation for my craft and ensure I am successful in my classes, projects and personal endeavors. I overcame this struggle by finding ways to “fill my cup” with mental health breaks, yoga routines and stress baking cookies during finals.

What are your favorite on-campus and off-campus spots?

My favorite on-campus spots are the Shocking Learning Center and Lindquist Hall. I adore Wiedemann Hall and its wondrous acoustic sound. The off-campus spots I recommend are Greater Grounds, Meddy’s and Wasabi Sushi Bar on the west side.

If a movie were made about your life, who would you cast to play you? And what genre would best capture your story?

I would cast Evanna Lynch to play me. The movie would be a comedy coming-of-age college movie that includes a scene in a Waffle House.

What are your plans after graduation?

My plans after graduation are to publish my manuscript “Sonder & Reverie” and work in a full-time position within my industry. I will continue writing and go wherever that takes me. I plan to keep traveling to other countries, ever since I began my abroad journey during the ɫƵ Travel Seminar last May to London and Dublin.

What advice would you give other Wichita State students?

Be committed to what you are passionate about and never be afraid to put yourself out there. Find joy in small things, and don’t settle for mediocrity — instead, chase what you’ve always wanted, no matter what others say.
