Barton School's Micro-Credential Programs Recognized as the First of Their Kind in the World

The Spero program at 九色视频鈥檚 W. Frank Barton School of Business is the first in the world to offer 1EdTech TrustEd Micro-credential certified programs. 1EdTech is a global leader in educational technology, working to improve how we learn with digital tools. Their certification guarantees that these courses are trusted and valuable, giving students an edge in their careers.

鈥淪pero was created to help people transform their lives through meaningful jobs and business opportunities,鈥 said Dr. Larisa Genin, Dean of the Barton School. 鈥淲e are proud that 1EdTech is recognizing our work. We鈥檒l keep leading the way in micro-credentials, offering students new ways to grow and make a real difference in their lives and our community.鈥

Launched in Fall 2024, Spero helps people unlock their potential by certifying that they are ready to thrive in both corporate environments and self-employment. The program has two tracks. The Career Readiness track helps students build key job skills. Inspired by and framed with 23 founding Spero Employers, it teaches the basics needed to land and succeed in today鈥檚 job market. Students participate in hands-on sessions and connect with employers who are ready to hire qualified candidates. The Entrepreneurship track provides hands-on training in differentiating a venture from competitors, creating high consumer demand, and scaling operations. Students gain access to a network of mentors and resources, equipping them with the tools and support needed to successfully launch and grow their businesses.

Micro-credential programs are becoming more prominent due to their practical application and specific curriculums. Alongside the Barton School, Wichita State is working to find new, innovative ways for students to further their education. This includes the university becoming a founding member of the TrustEd Micro-credential Coalition.

鈥淢icro-credentials are a great way for individuals to gain skills and knowledge that meet the needs of our communities,鈥 said Kim Moore, executive director of Workforce, Professional and Community Education at Wichita State. 鈥淪pero shows how powerful and transformative micro-credentials can be. The vision of Spero and the Barton School has highlighted the value and impact of these programs, inspiring colleges and universities across the country.鈥

To mark this milestone, the Barton School will celebrate the graduation of Spero鈥檚 inaugural Career Readiness and Entrepreneurship cohorts on Friday, March 14, 2025, at 5:00 PM in Woolsey Hall. These students will be the first in the world to receive 1EdTech TrustEd Micro-credential certificates, further solidifying their readiness for the workforce and entrepreneurial success.

鈥淭his event is all about celebrating the hard work and dedication of our students,鈥 said Dr. Larisa Genin. 鈥淲e look forward to honoring their achievements with their families, Spero Employers, and everyone who鈥檚 supported them along the way. This graduation marks not just the end of their journey, but the beginning of their impact in the workforce and the world of entrepreneurship.鈥
