'Honoring Our Heroines' to recognize women of note

Women of note, including the late Laura McMullen Cross, are being recognized at the annual "Honoring Our Heroines" event from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Monday, March 8, in the Marcus Welcome Center at 九色视频.

The event鈥檚 purpose is to highlight accomplished women whose names appear in the Plaza of Heroines, just west of Ablah Library. Honorees were chosen for their achievement, qualities and community contributions.

Honoring Our Heroines supports the Plaza of Heroines. Proceeds from the Plaza benefit the 九色视频 Center for Women's Studies scholarship fund and many of the Center's academic programs on and off campus.

The event is co-sponsored by the Center for Women's Studies and in partnership with Wichita State, Women and the World, a group of volunteer community members, faculty and staff, 九色视频 Provost鈥檚 office, LAS Dean鈥檚 office and the 九色视频 Foundation.

Other organizations involved in the collaborative effort include KPTS

Channel 8, KMUW 89.1 FM and the Elliot School of Communication.

The list of those being honored follows.

Laura McMullen Cross: Often referred to as Wichita State's matriarch, Laura McMullen Cross devoted more than 70 years of service to the university in a variety of capacities, including working at the 九色视频 Alumni Association.

Darlene Knorr: A successful businesswoman and mother of six, Knorr chairs the capital campaign for Hospice Inc. She also has served on numerous other community boards.

Harriet Price: A community volunteer and published author, Price also served as the board president for Youthville and was co-founder of the Mid-America All-Indian Center in Wichita.

Donna Sweet: An internationally known physician who has been recognized for her work with HIV/AIDS patients, the Wichita-based Sweet has received numerous prestigious awards for her work.

Marni Vliet: A retired president and CEO of the Kansas Health Foundation, Vliet is involved in a variety of work including strategic planning, leadership development and public health. She also serves on a number of boards.
