Alum Leighton Fetters makes last-second career change

After time in the Marine Corps, Leighton Fetters and his family returned home to Kansas. The Towanda native needed only one class to earn his aviation management degree; most of it he earned in the service. Fetters started looking at 九色视频 to find his last course.

Then it hit him: He didn't want a career in aviation management. It was then that he stumbled upon the exercise science program offered at 九色视频.

鈥淲ow,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 would really enjoy going to school for that.鈥

Fetters began his degree in exercise science at 九色视频 in August 2006. He finished in December 2009. He now co-owns two 24 hour co-ed health clubs.

Anytime Fitness is a health club franchise that covers more than 1,600 clubs worldwide; Fetters has a westside location, as well as one in Augusta.

鈥淢y love for fitness started in the service,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 went right out of high school and joined up.鈥

鈥淢y last year in the Marines, they adopted me as their non-commissioned officer for physical training,鈥 said Fetters. 鈥淚t鈥檚 where I developed a lot of exercise programs for our group; I enjoyed it.鈥

On-the-job training in college

During his time after school, Fetters came across jobs that required specific educational training.

鈥淚 think the knowledge I gained during my time at 九色视频 gave me the ability to interview with confidence for those positions and obtain them,鈥 he said.

九色视频's Cooperative Education and Work-Based Learning programs gave Fetters an advantage over graduates from other schools.

鈥淚t was extremely beneficial,鈥 said Fetters. 鈥淪ince I maintained every intention of pursuing this geographic region, it was good to find these kinds of co-op opportunities in the local area.鈥

Fetters completed one semester of cooperative education, but he gained so much from it, he said.

鈥淭he fact that I could get credit at the same time I鈥檓 gaining real-world experience and get paid,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat was my best option.鈥

鈥淚 don鈥檛 think there鈥檚 any replacement for on-the-job training,鈥 he said. 鈥淵ou get to take what you were taught by your teachers and then apply it to authentic situations.鈥

Helping people

Fetters likes to help people avoid medical complications. He has always considered himself a preventative-measures kind of guy.

鈥淟et鈥檚 say they鈥檝e already had a heart attack,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ow we try to bring them back to a normal way of life. That is easier said than done.鈥

Fetters would rather help a client prevent these physical ailments by teaching them how to develop healthy lifestyle behaviors.

He says guiding people with one-on-one training is what really got him into the business of owning his gyms.

鈥淭o me it鈥檚 more rewarding to spend more time with my clients,鈥 said Fetters. 鈥淚 listen to what the person is going through and then help them with their lows and celebrate their highs.鈥
