Global Village specials in store
Makeba, who passed away on November 10, was one of the most significant figures in African music, with a recording career that spanned five decades and reached across the entire globe. The program will cover music from throughout her career, from recordings done with vocal groups in South Africa in the 1950s to her last CD.

Monday, Dec. 1: World AIDS Day/Red Hot Records
This date marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, dedicated to raising awareness and working to fight AIDS. Since 1990 the Red Hot Organization has released some 15 CDs and DVDs that raised $7 million to support over 200 organizations around the world. The CDs feature musicians from around the globe working in a variety of styles and joined together by various themes, including salutes to Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Afrobeat pioneer Fela and music of Brazil. Global Village highlights the world music side of Red Hot in this special World AIDS Day program.
Friday, Dec. 5: Global Village Top 30 Special Holiday Edition
The first Friday of every month on KMUW 89.1 (and every Friday on KMUW HD2), Global Village features the best new releases currently being played on the program. In this edition of the show something a bit different, as Global Village highlights music from the best new holiday releases of 2008.
Global Village, hosted by Chris Heim, airs Monday through Friday at 9 p.m. on KMUW. You can also hear Global Village on the KMUW-HD2 24-hour music service Mondays through Thursdays at midnight, 9 a.m., 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., and Fridays at 5 p.m. The Global Village Top 30 show, the first Friday of every month on KMUW and part of world music Fridays on KMUW-HD2 airing at noon and 8 p.m., highlights the latest and best in world music new releases.
