Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul program is an employment powerhouse for our region
Wichita State’s National Institute for Aviation Research has achieved world acclaim for its groundbreaking advancements in research and development for the aviation industry. Its state-of-the-art labs and partnerships improved safety, sustainability and digital transformation for private companies and the defense industry.
It’s because of NIAR’s reputation for success that NIAR WERX has been chosen for a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul program to help engineer the aircraft of tomorrow. The MRO at Wichita State is one of only three in the world and two in the nation, so it’s a distinctive honor and a remarkable opportunity for our campus community.
Wichita State’s MRO program currently has two projects underway: converting a Boeing 777 from a passenger aircraft to a freighter, and special-missions modifications for the Boeing 737.
These are large-scale, long-term projects to promote sustainability within the aircraft industry by taking older airplanes and repurposing and reengineering them into the next generation of airliners.
Not only is the MRO an important program that promotes aircraft sustainability and efficiency, but it’s also an employment powerhouse, creating hundreds of applied-learning jobs for our students and full-time careers for experienced engineers and technicians.
In short, the MRO is good for Wichita State, its students, the state of Kansas, and all of Shocker Nation.
